You might check out tenor arias from Handel's Messiah (which is available at CPDL), especially "Every valley shall be exalted" and "Thou shalt break them"

The reference you cite is mainly for (outdoor) conducting for marching bands and not really suitable for choral conducting. Here are a couple of much better links: Conducting article at Wikipedia Conducting course PDF file(s) from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Chuck Giffen

Ummmmm ... did I say anything at all about mode or tone with respect to the Palestrina? - it was cited solely to illustrate the odd/even verses situation.

I'm sorry if I misspoke and referred to Octavi toni as Mode VIII when I should have said Tone 8.

Can we have an end to this?

ns writes: Chuck's example of his edition of Palestrina's "A Solis Ortus Cardine" is a little different, because it is a hymn. This example was given as one in which the even verses are composed, whilst the odd numbered verses are to be chanted. I did not intend it to have anything to do w...

Octatonic series and warmup tuning exercises

The octatonic scale/mode produces some lovely and interesting sounds, especially in choral music. The Wikipedia article on the Octatonic scale is an excellent (and accurate) resource. [ Edit Another resource which has good musical examples is Kenneth Rumery's Octatonic scale page. ] A few comments: ...

Hi Luis,

I think the Brian Marble SATB edition (transposed up a perfect fourth) from the cipoo.net version is quite satisfactory for performance and keeps the flavor of the voicings of the TTBB edition you mentioned.

i'm making a workshop next week with their maestro Peter Philips
Interestingly, I sang in a Peter Philips master class with Zephyrus (when the group was in its second year, I believe). The experience was marvellous.

I'm a little surprised that the Tallis Scholars, The Sixteen, and Anonymous 4 aren't on the list (for early music). For a group with more expansive repertoire and totally different choral sound, one might include the Dale Warland Singers. The Russian chamber choir "Lege Artis" is notable f...

Welcome Danny! I know that Finale PrintMusic can be a bit daunting (especially at first) and that it is somewhat limited in its features (compared to the full-fledged version of Finale), but once one gets a bit further up the learning curve, it becomes easier to use. I'm not sure if the PrintMusic e...

500 registered users!

Since the CPDL Bulletin Board started just over a year ago, we have passed the 500 count in registered users! It is both exciting and stimulating to have such a wide base of users interested in choral music, especially choral music in public domain, and we hope that users find this BB a useful forum...
