Using CPDL music as background music for lecture material

Post by dino2025 »

Hello,

I've read through the basic copyright license material, but have a question. What if I want to use a tune as low-volume background music underlying the academic audio lectures I am currently recording for my students? (Or possibly just use a tune to fade in and fade out at the beginning and end of the file?) These audio lectures are non-profit, but I copyright them as a matter of course. So would it be okay to use music on Choral Wiki that has a CPDL license for this purpose? If so, what notice should be given in the audio file itself?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello,

Could you please specify which specific contents (either sheet music or audio files) you intend to use? Contents at ChoralWiki are released under various copyright policies: the CPDL copyright policy is the most common, however others are also used and therefore a comprehensive reply requires to consider each specific case.

Hello,

I was thinking I might use a song or portion thereof as low-amplitude background music for an audio lecture. I don't want to use copies of sheet music.

Thanks for your response.

This is not clear to me. If, to make the background music, you use sheet music that is present on ChoralWiki, you have to follow the copyright policy of the specific edition (or editions) that you use. The situation may be slightly different in the case you use audio files available on Choralwiki rather than the sheet music. In all cases, it is necessary to consider the specific CPDL edition number (or numbers) that are of interest for you, as the copyright policy depends on the edition number. Could you please provide the relevant edition number(s)?
