MEI encoding

Post by user19823 »

What is the current recommendations about uploading score sources in MEI format?

I understand that it has not been an user friendly format for a long time but, for example, support in MuseScore is already decent for import/export.

My current editing workflow is 1) raw quick transcription in MuseScore, 2) Export raw score to MEI, 3) Work on the MEI file for corrections, editorial notes, etc... 4) Publish pdf and web versions from the MEI. So at the end that MEI file is my final source. If if convert it back to MusicXML all the critical notes, information about original clefs, corrections, etc... is lost. However I understand that all that information is relevant to me or to people doing critical editions of the same music, but maybe is not that important for the most common use cases of CPDL users.

Maybe an option could be uploading the MEI file and a MusicXML version that could be easily opened by anyone.

From which software comes the MEI file?
Yes, please add an MXL file to your Pdfs, as they're useable by most of our users.

Nowadays I create the MEI files with a home-made tool for manuscript transcription. Then any further (minor) edits I do them directly on the XML with a text editor and for changes that require lyrics edit or moving things around I use mei friend from https://mei-friend.mdw.ac.at/ The problem of opening the MEI with MuseScore is that you lose most of the non-visible information (if the accidental is editorial, corrections, alternative readings, annotations...). But yeah, that information is not that relevant for most users, so uploading the MEI file + MusicXML flat version would cover all cases in the most convenient way.

BTW, for a new work I just added I was planning to upload the files to CPDL (as I have seen is the preferred way over linking external URLs). PDF and MusicXML were fine but the MEI file could be uploaded because the system identified it as xml / potential html/script thing and I had to just link to the external URL for it.
