Search function and accent/umlaut marks

I've been asked a question about searching without special characters at
http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php?titl ... o_New_Page that I can't answer. Is it feasible to have "search" give Fauré as a result for "Faure" and so forth, as Google does?

We use the MediaWiki software, which includes a rather basic search function, unable to manage special characters the way one normally expects from more advanced search engines.
To support more advanced search functions we can implement the same solution adopted by Wikipedia, i.e., installing a specific MediaWiki extension named
CirrusSearch. It may be the right time now to do that, as we've recently upgraded the system to a very recent version of the MediaWiki software, so we can install recent versions of the CirrusSearch extension as well.

I think it will be useful to install such search system.
Anyway, we'd have to implement a Fauré/Faure disambiguation page that wasn't useful until now. Not a problem, though.
