Scores and MP3 files

Post by pateceramics »

When browsing through scores on CPDL, it might be nice to have the pdf of a score automatically open as a new window, or a new tab, when you click on it. So that you could then click on the MP3 file in one open window/tab, and read along in the score while listening, without having to think to open two windows yourself. (I know a few people who would balk from that sort of technical feat of computer wizardry if they were asked to figure out how to do it themselves.) If there is a technical reason that this would be challenging to set up for the speed of the site, server space, etc., that's fine, but it seems like anything that gives a more seamless experience would lead to more use of CPDL.

Cheers!

Thank you for the suggestion. However, IMO, this automatic behavior may limit the freedom of others who may want to do something different, for example to download files to the computer rather than opening them in a window.

The current implementation supports the standard adopted by all recent browsers, where the right button is used to select an action in a list of possible actions for the object selected, and the left button is used to directly perform the action in the list that is preferred by the user as a default. So, each user can determine the desired behavior by just configuring the browser (or by configuring nothing and selecting an action with the right button). If a specific action is forced on the server side instead, users preferring a different action may be disappointed.

I agree with you that most users probably tend to use the left button only, however this should not limit, IMO, the freedom of those who use the right button also.

Hi, you can do it yourself in a very simple manner: all modern browsers are configured to open a link in a new tab if you click on the link with the middle button of the mouse (if your mouse has the scrolling wheel, it's also the middle button). Then you can return to the original tab and click on the mp3/midi.

All good points! Just thinking it might streamline browsing through music for the less tech savvy CPDL users. (Who are currently looking at their mouses and realizing there is more than one button for the first time.) (:
