I'm a fan of Magalhaes and it's nice to be reminded of this piece (I haven't sung it since 2007 and am feeling neglectful). The version I have is a whole step up and only octivates the 5th line.

Out of curiosity, since I don't have a lot of experience editing scores, can you say a bit about how you decide whether to octivate a particular line and whether to transpose a piece?

Hello
This edition is not mine. It's from João Pedro d'Alvarenga, my U. teacher. I'll ask him why.

Thanks. No need to go to any trouble, but I am curious about the subject generally.

He told me that he uses octave clefs in the alto parts just not to use lines outside the pentagram. It's just a way of stick to the original practises.
So, there is no complex theory behind this kind of presentation.

Thanks! I'm starting to work on some editions on my own and am realizing how much there is to learn.

Me too.
Next year I'll have here at the University some subjects on History, Transcription and Editing early music. Maybe, after that,I can contribute here for cpdl with more portuguese polyphony. We have here great music but it's all to be done.
Greetings,
L.H.

That's excellent news, Luís! When I was creating some pages for the Portuguese and Spanish cancioneiros/cancioneros, I noticed how difficult it is to find on the net the music related to these early editions. In some cases, not even a complete index of the works could be found!

Unfortunatly your right. We are working hard to change this situation. In Brazil you're way ahead of us.
About the cancioneiros, if you need anything just say. In the next summer I will begin a new study on the Cancioneiro de Elvas.
Greetings,
