Wrong pdf link

Post by Toobaz »

Hello,
a while ago, I submitted the "Ave Maria a 4" by Josquin des Prez:

http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Ave_ ... _des_Prez)

however, by checking it today, I noticed the link goes to the wrong pdf.

I'm sure that I didn't upload (and never even seen) that wrong pdf.

I'm also quite confident that when at the time I uploaded the right one, I did try to download it to check everything had went fine.

So, in the end, I'd congecture that the pdf linked by that link changed in time.

Should I
- reupload the pdf and change the link? (the midi is OK, the .ly also)
- just write here so that someone competent understands what happened?

thanks

It's there, at

http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Ave_ ... es_Prez%29

You were missing a right parenthesis " ) "

Pietro didn't miss the right parenthesis, the malformed link was phpBB's fault (the automatic link generator leaves out a right parenthesis when creating the link).

But what Pietro is really talking about is the PDF file he uploaded:

http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/File:Ave_Maria.pdf

In January, Toobaz's PDF was replaced by another work by user Giancarlo Colleoni, for his own Ave Maria. This has happened quite often recently, due to users choosing too generic names for their files. It's always a good idea to append the user or composer name to the file, as for instance "Colleoni_Ave_Maria.pdf".

Pietro, Colleoni's PDF was given another name and your edition is already restored, ok?

Ah, thanks Carlos. I didn't realize the problem because of the botched link here. I second the recommendation that make their uploads user-specific.

Can someone edit Special:Upload to add the naming recommendation? Maybe something like...?
Important Note: The filename you choose will overwrite any files previously uploaded by others using the same filename, so be sure to include some text to make it unique.
Good: Josquin_AveMaria_20090528
Good: Josquin_AveMaria_your-user-ID
Avoid: Josquin_AveMaria
While making that change, is it possible to move the text about not infringing the rights of third parties to just above the Upload button and reword it as follows? Or is it there because it's harder to change the text below?
By clicking the Upload button, I attest that the content I am uploading does not violate the copyright or other intellectual property rights of anyone else.

Actually, there's already a naming convention in place, Vaarky, though I have to admit I have not followed it on every occasion. The score submission guide suggests:
"[first few letters of the composer's surname]-[first few letters of the work title]". For example, the upload of a PDF file of a Villancico by Francisco Valls, "Alegres mudanzas" would have the following filename: Valls-ale.pdf. The standard is the first 4 letters of the composer's surname followed by the first 3 letter of the work title but obviously where the composer's surname is only 3 letters long or when it is necessary to include more than just the first 3 letters of the work title for clarity, this would be preferable. Be sure to only use alphabetic and numeric characters (hyphens and underscore are also permitted). If there is already an edition of the work you are uploading, it is possible that the filename that you enter will be the same as an existing file and therefore be rejected by the wiki software. If this is the case, try typing a "2" or if that fails, "3" etc. at the end of the filename before the extension. In the example above, this would be Valls-ale2.pdf.
This system seems like a logical one to me - it keeps file names short and allows for more editions of the same work to be labelled appropriately.

This may have been true in the old system; the wiki software doesn't reject a new file with the same name (as this very case proved), it just warns the user that he/she will be overwriting another file. Unfortunately there isn't a way to enforce that users can only overwrite their own files.

The 4-3, 3-3, 3-4 naming conventions made more sense when one could not count on the operating system for handling more than 8 characters before the .pdf, .mid, .sib, .nwc, etc. extensions. Now even a space and other punctuation than just - and _ is handled appropriately, for example spaces and (i think) parentheses. To me, Josquin-Missa_Pange_Lingua-Giffen is just fine (although I haven't made such an edition yet). :)

I second Vaarky's suggestion about attesting that copyright and other rights are not violated, but with the proviso that they are not knowingly violated ... since we cannot expect contributors to be legal experts.

Inserting the word "knowingly" significantly changes the attestation our attorney recommended. No other site I know of throws away the protections it tries to get at via attestation by giving people room to plead ignorance. Is this something people feel strongly that we want to pursue? If so, I will ask the attorney. "Knowingly" should not be added unless this is resolved.

To me it's indifferent, but to be on the safe side I'd probably go with the attorney's recomendation.

Okay, I agree that we should leave "knowingly" out of it.

Just an update: there is a new setting that now allows such level of control; we've just implement it on CPDL. From now on users will be able to overwrite their own files only, but not others' files anymore.
